Introduction

UNS S41600(SUS416 stainless steel), also known as SUS416, is a stainless steel with the best machinability and is especially suitable for automatic lathe processing,it can be hardened by heat treatment to increase strength and hardness. Due to its low cost and ease of processing, SUS416 stainless steel is easily used in its high temper condition. It exhibits better processing characteristics than austenitic grades, but at the expense of corrosion resistance. High-sulfur free-machining grades such as Alloy 416 are not suitable for marine or any chloride exposure situations.

1. ASTM A582 / ASME SA582 

(Standard Specification for Free‑Machining Stainless Steel Bars and Wire Rods)

Type: 

  • 416 Free Machining Stainless Steel Bar

  • 416 Sulfur Added Stainless Steel Rod

  • 416 High Machinability Stainless Steel Wire Rod

Size Range:

  • Round bar: 3.0 – 150 mm dia (cold drawn or hot rolled)

  • Hex bar: 3.0 – 100 mm across flats

  • Square bar: 3.0 – 100 mm

  • Flat bar: up to 150 mm thick × 500 mm wide

Testing: Chemical analysis, tensile test (Condition A: Rm ≥485 MPa, Rp0.2 ≥275 MPa, elongation ≥20%; Condition T (tempered): Rm 585‑860 MPa, hardness 170‑240 HB; Condition H (hardened & tempered): Rm ≥965 MPa, hardness ≥30 HRC), hardness test, ultrasonic test (for large diameters), dimensional inspection


Applications

(1)Shafts – 416 stainless steel for shafts (pump shafts, motor shafts, roller shafts) leverages its high machinability and high strength after heat treatment, allowing rapid turning with excellent dimensional accuracy and wear resistance.

(2)Valves – 416 stainless steel for valves (valve stems, valve seats, ball valve trims) combines easy cutting performance with good corrosion resistance in steam, oil, and mild chemical service, reducing production time for complex valve components.

(3)Bolts and fasteners – 416 stainless steel for bolts and fasteners (screws, nuts, studs, threaded rods) benefits from sulfur‑added chip control during thread rolling and cutting, plus the ability to achieve high hardness (30‑35 HRC) through heat treatment for secure clamping.

(4)Machining parts – 416 stainless steel for machining parts (bushings, couplings, nozzles, instrument fittings) delivers excellent machinability and consistent surface finish, making it ideal for high‑volume CNC turning and Swiss‑type automatic lathes.

(5)Gears – 416 stainless steel for gears (small machine gears, actuator gears, timing gears) provides good corrosion resistance combined with high strength and hardness after hardening, plus the machinability needed for precise tooth cutting or hobbing.
